Violent clashes between police and protesters in Ukraine have been the focus of much attention recently.
And with the county’s elite riot police force celebrating their 25th anniversary, some students thought it necessary their day be commemorated.
More poignant than provocative, the small gathering comes as Ukrainian police face an international spotlight for their handling of recent demonstrations.
“We don’t wish them bad, nobody does, and we also expect that they won’t use force against us,” said student activist Mladena Kachurets. “Basically that fake blood that we brought along… We wanted to spill it here, but then changed our minds. It had to be a symbolic last drop of blood that will be shed in this struggle.”
So called Berkut units started life 25 years ago on Presidential orders to protect peoples safety.
Today allegations of police brutality dog Ukraine’s law enforcers as well as the current administration.
