South Africans have begun to mourn for their former leader.
Many gathered outside Nelson Mandela’s home, some in pajamas due to the late hour, to celebrate the life of the man who led their nation out of apartheid.
One woman said she was saddened by the news but continued, “I think he’s had his part in life and he did it very well and it’s fine that he goes. He did all he could. He was old, you know.”
A man joining the mourners agreed that it was a tragic end, adding, “We lost a great hero in South Africa and I think that many people are going to be upset about it.”
Another man tried to see the positive.
“I think we should celebrate what he has achieved and what he has given us. I wouldn’t be free if it wasn’t for him.”
As tears are shed and songs are sung, South Africans shared a moment of unity and of pride.
