Local favourite Gyeong-Mi Jeong kept her composure to edge out Ukraine’s Victoria Turks in the final of the under 78 kilo category at the Jeju Grand Prix in South Korea on Thursday.
The Tokyo Grand Slam silver medallist was still made to battle hard throughout the contest and was handed back-to-back shido penalties before stepping it up a gear in the final minute, eventually sealing the win with a well taken ippon seoi-nage.
In the men’s under 90 kilo class, South Korea’s Dong Han Gwak held his nerve to beat World Championships bronze medallist Ilias Iliadis by the narrowest of margins in the showpiece match.
Both judokas cancelled each other out during the bout, with Gwak eventually securing the win thanks to a clinical uchi-mata in extra-time.
The bronze medals were won by Japan’s Takeshi Sugahara and Ukraine’s Quedjau Nhabali.
