2013 Indigenous Games

With the build up to next summer’s World Cup in Brazil gathering pace, around 1500 competitors travelled to Cuiaba this week to take part in the12th International Games of Indigenous people.

From tug of war to archery, natives from 49 Brazilian ethnic groups battle it out every two years to celebrate ancient sports. Football is the only non-indigenous sport in the Games, among the 20 disciplines in the programme.

The Games, which began in 1996, are now considered to be the biggest indigenous sporting event in the world.
