France’s Audrey Tcheumeo produced a stunning performance to take gold in the women’s under 78 kg event at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.
The 23 year old, who had to settle for third place at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, disposed of Britain’s Natalie Powell by ippon inside a minute while Franziska Konitz also made light work of Algeria’s Sonia Asselah in the over 78 kilo class final.
Local favourite Sergiu Toma produced stunning performance to claim the men’s under 81 kilo category. The 26 year-old, who was up against Germany’s Sven Maresch in the showpiece match, scored a waza-ari early in the bout and held on to hand the hosts
their second gold medal.
Elsewhere, Italy’s Walter Facente edged out Noel Van End to clinch the under 90 kilo class thanks to a superb tai-otoshi in the dying seconds.
The bronze medals were won by Russia’s Kirill Denisov and Ramin Gurbanov.
