It’s a record for an Andy Warhol artwork.
At auction in New York, $105 million has been paid for the 1963 painting “Silver Car Crash”.
From the late pop artist’s seminal death and disaster series, it captures the immediate aftermath of a road accident and has reportedly only been seen in public once in the last 26 years.
Auction house Sotheby’s did not disclose the buyer, who was bidding by telephone.
The price is the second-highest ever for a contemporary work of art – more than $142 million was fetched by Francis Bacon’s “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” on Tuesday at Christie’s.
