Turkey has marked the 75th anniversary of the death of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish republic.

Thousands of people gathered at the mausoleum in Ankara where he is buried and President Gul and Prime Minister Erdogan laid wreaths at his grave.

A minute’s silence was also held around the country at 9.05am, the time of his death.

In Istanbul’s Dolmabahce palace, where Ataturk died in 1938, people brought flowers to the site of his bed and said prayers.
