Thousands of protesters have marched in Lisbon calling for the government to resign after it voted through an austerity budget for 2014.
Portugal has already seen three years of belt tightening as part of its international bailout deal with the EU and IMF.
The new budget will bring more severe cuts to wages and pensions for public sector workers
It was the first reading of the bill and the majority centre-right coalition government voted in favour with the entire centre-left opposition voting against.
A final vote will be held on November 26.
The main trade union, the CGTP has called for more strikes, beginning this Friday with a strike by civil servants.
Later in the month police officers will stage a walk out.
