Another dark cloud has cast a shadow over the build up to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil after a former professional football player was found decapitated in Rio de Janeiro this week.
The head of 35-year-old Joao Rodrigo Santos, who played for Bangu, Madureira, Botafogo and for teams in Sweden and Honduras, was found in a back pack outside his home in the early hours of Tuesday.
The motive for the crime remains unclear although the victim’s wife reportedly works for the military police in one of Rio’s pacification units, designed to crack down on gang activity.
The incident comes three months after an amateur referee in northern Brazil was decapitated after he fatally stabbed a player for refusing to leave the pitch.
