An inquiry has been launched into the discovery of an underfed and dehydrated baby found in the boot of a car in France.
The child was rescued by mechanics working at a garage in the country’s Dordogne region when her mother brought her vehicle in for repairs.
Garage owner Denis Latour said a moaning sound drew their attention.
“She was naked, completely naked,” he said. “On one side of the boot there was a crib, but the smell was unbearable smell, and the little girl was lying on a rubbish bag.”
The mother and her partner have been charged with abuse and neglect of the baby said to be aged between 15 and 23 months. Their three other children have been taken into care.
Prosecutor Jean- Pierre Lafite has been talking to the parents and told reporters: “The father gave us his version of the story and at the moment he denies having known anything about the child. All this of course needs to be verified.”
At their home in Brignac-la Plaine, neighbours said they had been unaware the woman had been pregnant. The child which appears to have been kept in the car since birth and is exhibiting developmental problems has been taken to hospital.
