Gut wins season-opening giant slalom

Switzerland’s Lara Gut kept her composure to clinch the opening race of the World Cup skiing season at the women’s giant slalom in Soelden, Austria on Saturday.

The 22 year old, a three-time world championship silver medallist, had won three previous World Cup races in the speed events but had never before secured this event, sending a strong message to her rivals less than four months before the Sochi Games.

Local favourite Kathrin Zettel produced a solid run but eventually had to settle for second place, 0.44 seconds behind the leader while Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg completed the podium after crossing the finish-line in an impressive time of 2 minutes and 26.44 seconds.
