The German football federation on Friday confirmed it will enter a bid to host the European championship in 2024.
Although the 2020 tournament will be hosted by varies cities across Europe, Germany are hoping to stage UEFA’s flagship event four years later all by themselves.
Federation President Wolfgang Niersbach said bidding for that tournament would allow sufficient time to give some of the 2006 World Cup venues a bit of a face lift.
He said: “We have been certain for a while now to steer towards this goal because we assume the generation of stadiums built for 2006 will not only need a tidy-up but even a full modernization in a further nine years.’‘
Germany will hope its successful staging of the 2006 World Cup will stand them in good stead to bag the rights for Euro 2024.
German officials have already put forward a bid for one of the packages to host matches for the Europe-wide tournament in 2020, with Munich the candidate city.
