China celebrate first gold at Combat Games


China claimed their first gold medal at the World Combat Games in St Petersdburg, Russia after winning the Women’s team Taekwondo final.

China locked horns with France in the showpiece match and edged 2-1 ahead after the first round.

However China scored ten points to their opponent’s 7 in the second and final round to secure the gold medal 12-8.

In the men’s fighting discipline of the ju-jitsu category Pavel Korzhavykh won the -62kg title.

The 26-year old from Russia beat Spain’s Francisco Javier Garcia Fernandez.

Fencing made it’s combat games debut in St Petersburg and Nikolai Novosjolov won the men’s individual epee gold.

The Estonian fencer got off to a blistering start from which his Hungarian opponent, Gabor Boczko, failed to recover.

Novosjolov eventually sealed the gold winning through 15 points to 6.
