Indonesian Fashion Week has kicked off in Jakarta. The collections on the catwalk included traditional batik and lots of silk. The MV Lydia collection was particularly elegant.
Svida Alisyahbana, the event’s organiser, said: “The intention of Jakarta Fashion Week is really to highlight the fashion industry. The fashion industry is not only promoting designers but really moving the industry forward to the next step, in order to make it a reality rather than just a dream, that Indonesia is the region’s fashion centre – which I believe is true.”
Edward Hutabarat’s collection included traditional batik elements along with playful colours. The Steffie Setiawan summer collection was also well-received.
Over the week, 230 designers and fashion brands are on the Jakarta catwalks, including from the Netherlands, Thailand, Korea and Japan.
Gilian Stevan of Fashion Watch was encouraged by the youth talent on show. “I see a lot of young designers here at this year’s event,” she said. “I think they are all very talented and on a par with designers from abroad, and with their seniors. This event is better than last year’s fashion week.”
