Ukraine’s Ivan Vasylchuk produced a stunning performance to edge out Emin Sheykhislyamov of Canada and clinch the Men’s Sambo final in St. Petersburg on the opening day of the SportAccord World Combat Games, an event that will see 1,500 athletes from 120 countries compete in 15 sports.
The bronze medals were won by Lithuania’s Radvilas Matukas and Nikola Milosevic of Serbia.
Elsewhere, Mongolia’s Byambajav Ulambayar kept his composure to clinch the Sumo tournament.
The 28 year old, who won the US Open Championship held in California in 2009, proved too strong for his opponents throughout the competition, outclassing Russia’s Alan Karaev in the showpiece match.
