A man has died while trying to defend his home from Australia’s raging wildfires.
The 63-year-old suffered a heart attack while battling the inferno in a coastal community north of Sydney.
At least 100 homes have been destroyed and thousands of people have been forced to evacuate the area.
The fire service say there are still around 30 fires burning out of control.
The fires, which have left a thick pall of smoke over Australia’s biggest city, have been fueled by unseasonably high temperatures and strong winds.
A firefighter with New South Wales Fire Service said: “The fire activity that was being reported was certainly extreme. Certainly we had flame heights in excess of 20 to 30 metres.”
Wildfires hit the state of Victoria in January.
