Newly appointed Croatia coach Niko Kovac said on Thursday his side have the talent to reach the World Cup finals in Brazil next year but have currently lost their focus.
Kovac was named coach of the Balkan nation after Igor Stimac was sacked on Tuesday following a lacklustre qualifying campaign in which they only just clinched a playoff berth.
The former international midfielder said: ‘‘I think that all these guys are top football players, but at this moment their heads are on strike. Their minds are wandering off and we need to work on that”.
Croatia took only one point from their last four qualifiers but managed to limp across the finish line to reach next month’s two-legged playoffs.
Kovac’s side are one of the four seeded teams in the playoffs and will face either France, Sweden, Romania or Iceland.
The draw takes place in Zurich on Monday.
