Russia opens criminal case against potash boss

Russia is seeking the extradition from Belarus of Vladislav Baumgertner, the boss of potash producer Uralkali.

The firm’s CEO was detained during a visit to Minsk in late August after Urakali sparked a row between Russia and Belarus when it unexpectedly withdrew from a sales cartel.

Federal investigators say they have opened a criminal investigation into Baumgertner on suspicion of abuse of power, the main charge he faces in Belarus.

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko had said his country could hand over Baumgertner, 41, who is under house arrest in Minsk, as long as Russia takes steps to prosecute him.
