Russian police are searching for the killer of a young ethnic Russian man, fatally stabbed on October 18. His death sparked anti-migrant protests, which led to more than 400 arrests.
The police presence has been stepped up in the south of Moscow after protesters stormed a shopping centre where many migrants work. Nationalists involved in the protest were shouting slogans such as “Russia for Russians the Russian” and “White power”.
The violence erupted after a security camera image of the suspect was released. Local media reported that the photo suggested he was of non-Slavic appearance, leading nationalists to conclude that he hailed from the North Caucasus.
Some locals have criticised the authorities for failing to regulate illegal immigrants. One said: “I am surprised by the indifference of the police. All these migrants live here, living without registration, and the police do nothing.”
