Space legend Scott Carpenter dies

The astronaut, Scott Carpenter, who in 1962 became the fourth American in space and the second to orbit the earth has died aged 88 years old.

Carpenter’s pioneering space flight was packed with incident. He lost radio contact with NASA and was found in the ocean 250 miles from the targeted splash down site.

Carpenter later went on from astronaut to aquanaut, at one time spending 30 days living at a depth of 62 metres.
