She was Europe’s most famous heroin addict.
Christiane F. shot to fame in the late 1970s with her autobiography “We Children from Bahnhof Zoo”. It was followed by the film based on her book, in which her teenage drug use and prostitution were documented.
The German teenager became a star overnight and earned a lot of money – but the pressure was too much for her and she was soon back on drugs, which have played a major role for most of her life.
“If I was given the choice today, I would say no,” says Christiane V. Felscherinow. “I wouldn’t have done it, I would have taken control of my own life, I wouldn’t have become addicted again. How? To what?”
Now she is launching the sequel, “Christiane F – My second life”.
“There came a point when it was time for me to say, ‘OK, I just have to tell my story again, what’s happened since then, because there are people who want to know,’” she says about the book.
It looks back at the last 35 years of her life, which have been overshadowed by drugs. During this time, she has ended up in prison several times. The birth of her son in 1996 brought renewed hope – even though she temporarily lost custody of him.
“I think that my son was something positive for me – I gained in maturity, it was clear to me from the beginning: I can be a mother, I can do this and not screw up,” she says.
Today, Christiane is on methadone and suffers from Hepatitis C, which is slowly destroying her liver. When she was 16, Christiane F. didn’t think she would live to see her 30th birthday. Thirty five years later, she launching her second book.
