Azeris have woken up to the news that President Ilham Aliyev has won a third term in the October 9 presidential election.
Official results show that, with nearly all ballots counted, Aliyev has won nearly 85 percent of the vote.
The opposition Social Democratic Party acknowledged that they did not have a chance of making a dent in his lead.
Deputy Chairman Saladin Alakhmedov said: “Aliyev was the only real candidate. I don’t see any alternative to him, although I am myself a deputy chairman of an opposition party. There’s just no real alternative to him at the moment.”
Presidential challenger Jamil Hasanli has cried foul over voting irregularities. He said he planned to contest the election results in court.
