Don Jon: porn addict meets princess

“Don Jon” is the first of its kind: a romantic comedy built around porn.

It’s the story of Jon, a good old-fashioned boy who likes women but prefers pornography, and of Barbara, a good old-fashioned girl who is looking for her prince charming.

US actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays “Don Jon”. It is also his directorial debut.

“Where did the story come from,” he asks. “The story comes from how people sometimes treat each other rather like things than like people and how media can contribute to that. That’s why I thought a relationship between a young man who watches too much pornography and a woman who watches too many romantic Hollywood movies would be a funny way of talking about how these fantasies we get from screens change the way we think about the world and love and sex in particular,” says Gordon-Levitt.

Barbara is played by Scarlett Johansson. A New York native, she says she didn’t need to go far for inspiration.

“I didn’t really model her after anybody in particular, although I knew I wanted her to feel like a Short Hills (New Jersey) kind of girl, a little fancy. She takes very good care of herself. She’s very well-groomed. She has her own version of style, even down to her hair color. I know where she got it done. That’s because I’m fortunate enough to not have had to look too far to do the research,” says Johansson.

Described as smart and funny by some, the movie has also been slammed as rude and repetitive by others. But critics mostly agree
that “Don Jon” is a decent first shot at directing by Gordon-Levitt.

The film is out now in north America and will be released throughout Europe this autumn.
