The Olympic flame has been handed over to Russia from the Marble Stadium in Athens, the venue for the first modern games in 1896.
It will now travel 65,000 kilometres, looping around Russia’s 83 regions on foot, by sleigh, hot air balloon and even through space.
It will eventually arrive in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, which hosts the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The flame will then ignite the Olympic cauldron on February 7, which will then burn for the duration of the games.
