Brazil beat the best at the Judo Grand Prix in Tashkent


Day two of the Judo Grand Prix in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and a big day for the Brazilian women.

In the women’s -57kg category Brazil’s Ketleyn Quadros and the American Hana Carmichael met for just one minute before Quadros pulled off a perfect ippon-seoi-nage.

The -63kg class again pitted a Brazilian, Mariana Barros against an American, Hannah Martin and again it was Brazil that came out victorious. Barros winning with a morote-seoi-nage for ippon.

Brazil claimed a third gold in the -70kg category when Barbara Timo beat her compatriot Nadia Merli.

In the men’s -81kg category hot favourite Travis Stevens from the US met the Iranian Amir Ghasemi Nejad. It was Stevens, back from injury, who claimed the spoils with a o-soto-gari and an ippon-seoi-nage for the win.

In the -90kg class the home fans got a final they simply could not lose when two Uzbek judoka Sherali Juraev and Erkin Doniyorov took to the tatami. It was Juraev that beat his teammate in the final, but Doniyorov was handed the best athlete of the day award.
