The Russian embassy in Libya came under fire on Wednesday when a group of around 60 people tried to force their way into the compound.
The attackers reportedly opened fire and tore the Russian flag before security guards fired shots to disperse them.
None of the diplomats was injured as the embassy was empty at the time.
There have been a number of attacks on Western diplomats by militant groups linked to al Qaeda affiliates.
However, a Libyan security source said this attack did not appear to be directly linked to any militant group.
