The leader of Greece’s far-right Golden Dawn party has been jailed pending trial.
On Wednesday Nikolaos Mihaloliakos was escorted to court flanked by anti-terrorism police. He faces charges of running a criminal organisation and recruiting for it.
His wife joined hundreds of Golden Dawn supporters outside court singing they would “fight until death” for Golden Dawn. Eleni Zaroulia is also an MP for Golden Dawn.
The party describes itself as nationalist but is widely seen as being neo-Nazi.
Earlier on Wednesday, three other Golden Dawn MPs were released pending a trial for criminal charges.
The Greek government has recently cracked down on the extremist organisation after a left-wing musician was stabbed to death by a suspected Golden Dawn supporter.
On Thursday, another Golden Dawn MP, Christos Pappas, said to be the organisation’s number two, will appear in front of a prosecutor.
