Modern China celebrates 64th birthday

It is the People’s republic of China’s 64th birthday, and the middle kingdom has been celebrating its rebirth and rise under the Communist party’s rule.

All of China’s top leaders attended the ceremony of flower-laying in Tienanmen square in Beijing in pouring rain which did nothing to dampen the serried rows of singers. The National Day ceremony has been held every year since 2008, and this is President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang’s first since taking office.

Another anniversary, one marking the 25th anniversary of the Tienanmen square massacre, is upcoming, and in Hong Kong demonstrators attempted to disrupt the National Day celebrations to remind people of the events of 1989.
