Western diplomats have been highlighting Iran’s new tone over the past few days – saying that country’s the country’s President Hassan Rohani brought a fresh approach with him on his landmark trip to the US this week.
As Rohani rounded off his New York visit, it was time for him to repay the compliment. He told journalists during a press conference at the Plaza Hotel: “Speaking with senior European officials and also hearing US President Obama – they sound different compared to the past and I view this as a positive step in the settlement of the differences between Iran and the West.”
Rohani’s words came just a day after his Iran’s Minister Javad Zarif sat down with US Secretary of State John Kerry – for a meeting on Iran’s long-disputed nuclear programme.
It marked the highest-level substantive talks between Washington and Tehran for decades.
