So what would you do if you came across a treasure chest of emeralds, rubies and sapphires while scaling an Alpine glacier?
After getting over the shock, one particularly honest French mountain climber handed in his lucky find to the police.
It may have come from the Malabar Princess, an Air India plane that crashed on Mont Blanc in 1950, killing 58 people. Since then, and after another Air India aircraft went down in the same place in 1966, with more than 100 deaths, many unexpected discoveries have been made.
Indian authorities are being contacted to try to trace the rightful owners of the box of booty, should it be from one of the doomed planes. If no-one comes forward, finders keepers could apply – with the anonymous mountain climber in line to hold onto the jewels valued at up to 246,000 euros.
