Oracle Team USA completed one of sport’s greatest comebacks on Wednesday after beating challengers Team New Zealand to win the 34th edition of the America’s Cup on San Francisco Bay.
The American’s were docked two points before the regatta for illegal modifications to their boat and after a blistering start to the event by the Kiwis they soon found themselves trailing their rivals 8-1 in the first-to-nine final.
Since last Wednesday New Zealand have been at match point.
But with four-time Olympic champion Ben Ainslie on board as tactician alongside skipper Jimmy Spithill, defending champions Team USA, began a remarkable comeback.
After winning seven races on the trot to draw level at 8-8, USA sent the Cup into a winner-takes all final race which they won by a commanding 44 seconds to retain their title.
