Voters in the Italian speaking Swiss canton of Ticino have become the country’s first district to back a ban on face-covering veils.

Those in favour claim the burqa is a barrier to integration but rights groups claim the ban discriminates against Muslims.
Amnesty International said the vote was a “black day for human rights in Ticino”.
