Basketball: European Champions France return home

Newly crowned European champions France returned home to a hero’s welcome as well as a media scrum at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport on Monday.

Hundreds of fans crowded around the arrivals hall and outside the airport just north of the French capital hoping to get an autograph, photo or just a very high five from their smiling idols, who finally won the country’s maiden basketball title.

France cruised to a 14-point victory over three-times champions Lithuania to win the Eurobasket and wash away the disappointment of losing to Spain in final of the 2011 edition.

Tony Parker won the most valuable player award and after the match the three-times NBA champion with the San Antonio Spurs said: ‘‘I did not want to disappoint because I knew the whole country was behind us: It is great to be a part of history, to be a part of the first French basketball team to become European champions.’‘
