Wichman shines in Austria

Dutch rider Joost Wichman kept his composure to clinch the mountain biking Four Cross World Championship in Austria on Saturday.

In front of 5,000 spectators in ideal conditions at Saalfelden Leogang, the 35-year-old came from behind to edge out France’s Quentin Derbier in the closing stages.

Michael Mechura produced a solid run but it wasn’t to be for the Czech rider who eventually had to settle for third place ahead of fellow countryman Tomas Slavik.

Elsewhere Caroline Buchanan led from start to finish to clinch the women’s event.

The 22 year old, who took silver at the World Championships 2 years ago, dominated her opponents from the outset and crossed the finish line ahead of Britain’s Katy Curd with Celine Gros of France completing the podium.
