Romania: thousands link hands in human chain to protest against open-cast mine

Thousands of Romanians have formed a human chain around Parliament to protest against plans by a Canadian firm to set up Europe’s biggest open-cast gold mine.

Gabriel Resources would use cyanide to extract 314 tonnes of gold and 1,500 tonnes of silver from the Carpathian Mountain region.

This is the 14th day of protests in Bucharest against the Rosia Montana project.
