Russian authorities have confirmed that 37 people have been killed by a fire at a psychiatric hospital in the village of Luka, in Russia’s Novgorod region.
A building, housing a male in-patient unit, was destroyed by the pre-dawn blaze.
Many people are still unaccounted for. Authorities believe some patients may have escaped.
Initial reports suggest the fire could have been started by a patient setting his bed alight.
The Russian Emergencies Ministry had previously recommended that the hospital stop using the building that was destroyed by the fire. It was made of wood and had low fire resistance.
