Vuelta a Espana: Mollema claims stage 17

Dutch rider Bauke Mollema produced a superb solo effort to claim the 17th stage of the Spanish Vuelta in Burgos on Wednesday.

After a relatively slow start to the 189-km ride from Calahorra, the 26 year old broke away from the pack only 500 metres from the finish line to see off his Norwegian rival Edvald Boasson Hagen in an impressive time of 4 hours, 44 minutes, 28 seconds.

Argentina’s Maximiliano Richeze produced a solid run but it wasn’t to be for the Lampre-Merida rider as he eventually had to settle for third place ahead of Tyler Farrar and Radioshack’s Fabian Cancellara.

Ireland’s Nicolas Roche moved up one place to fifth in the overall standings after coming 10th while current leader Vincenzo Nibali finished safely to maintain his 28-second advantage over the chasing pack.
