The verdict in a gang rape case in New Delhi in which the victim later died of her injuries is due on Tuesday with the four suspects facing a possible death sentence if found guilty.
A teenager has already been sentenced to three years in jail while a sixth suspect committed suicide while on remand.
The 23-year-old victim was attacked on a bus, repeatedly raped and tortured with a metal bar before being dumped along with her friend on the roadside. Her friend recovered from the attack.
The landmark case sparked protests and a national debate about the treatment of women in India.
A law passed last March provided for stricter punishments on gender crimes but women’s rights groups say a re-education of male attitudes is vital.
