Ian Watt and Francesca Ross – the British electro pop duo that together make up ‘I Am A Camera’ – are widely considered one of the most exciting acts to have appeared on the UK music scene in 2013.
After the viral success of their single ‘Factory Boys’, the two were snapped up by Capital Records America. For Watt, the record label’s approach was completely unexpected: “It was really exciting… we put something online and everything was very D.I.Y. with the video. We put it all up, it was all just us. Then one of the managers contacted us and said ‘I’ve just seen this online.’ And that jumped to having a meeting where someone flies over from Capital Records America to meet you. There were some really strange moments but it was also really exciting.”
Despite producing music which largely caters for the clubbing community, the pair profess their new album – ‘The Legendary Children’ – is not wholly happy-go-lucky and upbeat. As Watt notes: “Self-harming and depression are both in there somewhere, I’m sure. But I think with ‘Legendary Children’ it is all about being creative and having the guts to get up every morning and doing it that way. It is just about being strong really.”
I Am A Camera’s new album ‘The Legendary Children’ is available for download now.
