Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery beat usual suspects Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win UEFA’s Best Player in Europe award.
Although the France international scored 11 goals in all competitions, compared to Messi’s 60 and Ronaldo’s 57, he was recognized for his crucial part in Bayern’s unprecedented Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup treble last season.
Ribery, who takes over from Andres Iniesta as the winner of the accolade, earned 36 votes in the poll of journalists from across Europe, 23 more than four-time reigning world player of the year Messi.
Real Madrid star Ronaldo earned just three votes.
