Movie stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock tread the red as the Venice Film Festival gets underway.
The pair showcased their new 3D space adventure “Gravity,” the story of two astronauts whose vessel is destroyed by space debris as a result of a botched Russian missile strike on a spy satellite.
Italian Director Bernardo Bertolucci heads the jury:
“We know that perhaps cinema cannot change the world, but we do know that cinema can create a world. That is all,” he said.
Twenty films are in the hunt for the Golden Lion trophy, which will be presented at the end of the world’s oldest film festival.
Terry Gilliam’s dark fantasy “The Zero Theorem” and Stephen Frears’ “Philomenia” are in the running.
