Kosovo’s Majlinda Kelmendi produced a stunning performance to down local hope Erika Miranda and take gold in the women’s under 52 kilo category at the 2013 World Judo Championships in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.
The 22 year old, who won the Junior World Championships in 2009, was made to battle hard throughout the contest and was even penalised for passivity before stepping it up a gear in the dying seconds, prevailing with a clinical mune-gatame.
In the men’s under 66 kilo class, Japan’s Masashi Ebinuma kept his composure to edge out Kazakhstan’s Azamat Mukanov in the showpiece match.
The 2011 world champion looked in control and dominated his opponent before sealing the win with an ouchi-gari for ippon.
The bronze medals were won by Japan’s Masaaki Fukuoka and Georgii Zantaraia of Ukraine.
