Local hope Daniel Moreno overcame a late surge from Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara to clinch the fourth stage of the Vuelta a Espana from Lalin to Fisterra in Galicia on Tuesday.

After a relatively slow start to the race, the Katusha rider stepped it up a gear and broke away from the pack almost within sight of the finish line, en route to a convincing win in an impressive time of 4 hours, 37 minutes and 47 seconds.

Cancellara, who won the Paris–Roubaix three times and the Tour of Flanders twice, produced a solid run but it wasn’t to be for the time trial world champion as he eventually had to settle for second place with Australia’s Michael Matthews completing the podium.

Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali finished 16th on the same time as Moreno, enough to overtake America’s Christopher Horner in the overall standings with Saxo-Tinkoff’s Nicolas Roche in third, eight seconds off the pace.
