A deadly clash between rival inmates in a Bolivian jail has left at least 30 dead and more than 50 injured. Security officials say they fear the death toll could be much higher after the fighting broke out in the Palmasola jail.
One child is among the dead. Under the country’s legislation children under six are allowed to live with their parents in the high security complex outside Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s biggest city.
Fighting broke out early on Friday morning as inmates fought for control in two of the cellblocks.
A police official said prisoners had blown up a metal propane tank while local media sources reported shots had been heard after the explosion.
Over five thousand are incarcerated in the prison. President Evo Morales expressed “dismay” over the deaths and has ordered an urgent investigation.
