Record number of tourists in Spain

Barcelona has won the hearts of many artists and writers and it continues to mesmerise visitors.

Spain has seen a record number of holidaymakers visit this year, and the foreign invasion was led by Britons.

The recent unrest in other popular destinations such as Tunisia and Egypt may go some way to explaining the swell in numbers.

The tourist industry had suffered a five million drop in tourists at the height of the economic crisis in 2009, but July’s figures of 7.9 million visitors will come as a welcome relief to the recession struck peninsula, since the industry accounts for 11 percent of the country’s GDP.
