The day after he was sentenced to 35 years in military prison, Bradley Manning has announced he wants to live as a woman and be called Chelsea.
The former US army soldier was convicted on Wednesday of 20 charges, including espionage and theft after giving more than 700,000 secret files, videos and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks.
Manning’s lawyers argued he suffered a sexual identity crisis when he leaked secret files while serving in Iraq in 2009 and 2010.
They added the 25 year old had not wanted his sexual identity to become public, but it did after his arrest in 2010.
His lawyers also confirmed that he was seeking hormone therapy and not a sex-change operation and that Manning didn’t want to be sent to a women’s prison.
