Caught on camera: apparent police brutality

French prosecutors have launched a probe after a video showing a police officer apparently beating a woman with a baton and pepper-spaying her in the face was posted online.

The amateur video was filmed in Joué-lès-Tours, a suburb of Tours, in the south-west of France.

According to local daily newspaper La Nouvelle Republique, the two officers had stopped a car driving erratically on the street and found the driver highly intoxicated.

The driver reportedly refused to undergo a breathalyser test and was seen by an eyewitness kicking a policeman in the face, biting his arm and trying to grab his radio.

Gaëlle James, Police Union, said: “I understand that people could be shocked by this kind of video when they don’t know the circumstances of the police action.”

The driver has been charged with drunk driving and the first woman with “insulting a police officer.”
