The trial of South African Olympic and Paralympic athlete, Oscar Pistorius, accused of the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp is due to start on March 3 2014.
Appearing in court on Monday amid a huge media frenzy, the double-amputee -who is known as ‘Blade Runner’ for the prosthetics he wears in competitions – was given the trial date on what would have been the 30th birthday of Ms. Steenkamp.
Pistorius is accused of firing four shots through a bathroom door in his Pretoria home on February 14 this year and killing his girlfriend. The 26-year-old claims he was acting in self-defence against what he thought was an intruder in his home.
If found guilty he faces life imprisonment.
The trial, to be held in the South African high court, is expected to last until March 23.
