Hostage crisis in Germany

A man has taken two men and one woman hostage at Ingolstadt city hall in the German state of Bavaria.

According to a police spokesman, the unidentified man entered the building just before 9 o’clock on Monday morning and said he was armed. He is believed to be in contact with the security forces and has made no demands.

Local media are reporting that the man is a 24-year-old psychiatric patient who fled from a clinic in the nearby town of Pfaffenhofen. He was being held there for violating a restraining order brought against him for stalking a 25-year-old woman.

Chancellor Angela Merkel was due in the town this afternoon as part of her re-election campaign in Germany’s national elections in September but has now cancelled her trip.
