France’s Marion Bartoli shocked the tennis world when she announced her retirement from the sport following her defeat at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Wednesday.
Less than a month after claiming the Wimbledon title, the 28-year-old, ranked seventh in the world, said she was taking the decision with immediate effect due to a succession of injuries.
An eight-time winner on the WTA Tour, Bartoli, who was introduced to the sport by her father and coach Walter, took part in every grand slam since the 2002 U.S. Open, compiling 490 singles wins in her career.
